Financial Planner vs. Adviser: Which Does Singapore Need?

The terms "financial planner" and "financial adviser" are often used interchangeably in Singapore, but subtle differences exist. Understanding these can help you find the right professional for your unique situation.

1. Financial Planner: The Big-Picture Architect A financial planner focuses on your overall financial health. They create a comprehensive, long-term strategy covering budgeting, savings, insurance, tax planning, and retirement. They are your go-to for building a solid financial foundation.

2. Financial Adviser: The Product Specialist A Financial Adviser (as regulated by MAS) is licensed to recommend and sell specific financial products like investment funds, stocks, and insurance policies. Their advice is often more transactional and product-focused to meet specific needs within your larger plan.

3. The Ideal Scenario: A Collaborative Approach For most people, the lines are blurry. A good professional often wears both hats. They should first understand your big-picture goals (the planner role) and then recommend suitable products to fulfil those goals (the adviser role).

4. Your First Meeting: Questions to Ask Regardless of the title, ask these: "Are you licensed by MAS?" "What are your fees?" "Are you tied to selling products from specific companies?" Their answers will reveal their approach and whether they prioritise your interests.

Don't get caught up in the title. Focus on finding a qualified, transparent professional who listens to you and provides advice that puts your financial well-being first.

You want to start investing but you are scared to do so because of the fear of losing money. You are not alone and honestly this fear is more common than you think. Someone in his 20s reached out to me; he has saved up quite a decent amount of money but he has held back on investing for over a year because of fear. He told me that growing up he was conditioned to think that investing is risky and he was advised to stay away. But deep down he knew that investing is really important but he just needs some guidance. Not investing does feel safe but inflation is quietly eating away at your savings. There are many many financial advisors out there; most are good at what they do but how exactly do you choose a financial advisor that's right for you? But before we dive into that let's define what is a financial advisor. According to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada financial advisor is a general term for someone who helps you manage your money. Examples include an employee of your financial institution an investment broker or an insurance agent. Having a baby soon? Congrats! But have you thought about their education fund? University fees in SG keep going up so starting early is key. As your financial advisor I usually suggest a mix of savings plans and endowments—low risk steady growth. My client started when their kid was 1; now at 18 they have enough for NUS fees no need to stress later. DM me "baby fund" if you want to plan for your little one no obligation. Hey Singaporeans thinking of upgrading your HDB but confused about the loan options? Don't panic lah! As your financial advisor I'll break it down simply: HDB loan versus bank loan which one fits your budget better? We'll check your CPF ordinary account balance too no need to guess. Many friends thought bank loans are cheaper but sometimes HDB's fixed rate is safer. Look DM me "HDB" now let's plan your upgrade without stress. Planning a holiday but don't want to dip into your savings? Smart move! As your financial advisor I'll show you how to use travel insurance plus savings plans to fund your trip. My client saved $300 monthly for one year got a bonus from the plan and went to Japan—no debt no need to wait till later lah. DM me "travel" now let's make your holiday happen. Freelancers in SG listen up! No CPF contributions from employers so retirement planning is all on you. But don't worry there are ways to build your nest egg. As your financial advisor I recommend setting up a SRS account first—tax relief some more—and then adding a small monthly investment. Last year a freelance designer did this and now has extra $5000 yearly. Want to know the exact steps? Comment "freelance" below I'll help you out. CPF is not just for retirement you know. A lot of Singaporeans forget they can use CPF for insurance or even investing. But wait don't just jump in blindly lah! As your financial advisor I'll tell you: first make sure your basic retirement sum is on track then we talk about other uses. Last month a client used CPF to buy a low-risk fund and got extra returns. Want to know how? Drop "CPF" in comments I'll share tips. If you're looking to get a financial advisor to help you with your money choosing the right one is mission critical and there are a few things that you should be looking out for when you choose an advisor. The first and the most important one in my opinion is that you need to have someone that's an expert in solving your problems. You need to have someone that's got deep experience solving the problems that you're facing so that they know they can get you to where you want to be. The second is that they work with people like you and the first two can be sort of related. Now let's talk about finding the right financial advisor here in Singapore. Whether you're just starting out or maybe you're looking for a change it is important for us to find someone who we can trust who understands your unique situation. Here are three tips for you to find the right financial advisor that's suitable for you. First thing that you should be looking out for is the credentials of the person that you're speaking to. Preferably find someone with the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) credentials as this ensures that the person that you're speaking to has the necessary skills. What do you actually need to look for when it comes to buying insurance? Look for someone who listens to you before they sell for someone who's readily available and not just someone that disappears after selling. Somebody who you drop a message to or give a call to and is contactable somebody that actually knows their stuff. I find it important to look for agents who actually are experienced in this field constantly upgrade themselves and go for courses and their qualifications are in the same field. This helps with saving through a lot and honestly somebody who doesn't talk to you like a robot with technical jargon.
